A Trifle of Chocolate and Caramel Perfection

This trifle is for you if you are a huge sweet tooth like me. The combination of the rich chocolate brownies and creamy caramel cheesecake filling is like a dream! You can also add the chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, chocolate whipped cream and caramel candies. This trifle dish will be your favorite!

This dessert can be made from scratch or with store-bought caramel sauce and chocolate sauce. You’ll find layers upon layers and bliss in either way. This one is a must-try!

What is a Trifle?

A trifle can be described as a super-sized parfait. It’s a multi-layered dessert made in one large pan rather than in individual dishes. So that all the delicious layers can be seen, I make my trifles in clear glass dishes.

Trifles are traditionally made from egg custard, fresh fruits, and cubed pound cake that has been soaked in sherry. Today’s version swaps the pound cake with fudgy brownies and the custard for the caramel cheesecake filling.

Ingredients you’ll need

Let’s look at what you need to make this sweet-salty treat. For specific quantities, could you scroll down to our recipe card?

For the Brownies

  • Unsalted Butter: Melted.
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract: To enhance the flavor of cocoa powder.
  • Large Eggs
  • All-Purpose Flour: Use a food scale to measure the flour. To ensure precision, level the measuring cup at the top. You won’t use enough flour if you put the measuring cup in the flour.
  • Cocoa Powder – Unsweetened and Natural – Not Dutch Processed.
  • Baking powder
  • Salt

Caramel Cheesecake Filling

  • Cream Cheese: At room temperature
  • Brown Sugar This should not be mixed with flour.
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Caramel Sauce: You can use your favorite brand to make it, or you can make it from scratch.
  • Heavy whipping cream: Let it chill until you are ready to use.
  • Powdered sugar: To stabilize whipped cream.

Chocolate Whipped Cream

  • Heavy whipping cream: It should be nice, cold.
  • Powdered sugar: To stabilize whipped cream.
  • Cocoa powder: Natural, unsweetened. This powdered sugar is not only flavorful but also helps keep the whipped cream fluffy for many days.
  • Vanilla Extract

Layering into the Trifle

  • Chocolate Sauce You can either use a bottled version of this recipe or make my Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce.
  • Caramel Sauce
  • Heath Bits
  • Rolo Candies: These babies are my favorite addition to the dish.

How to Make a Caramel Cheesecake Brownie trifle

  • It’s not easy to see a lot happening in this dessert. Follow my example!

Get the Brownies

    1. Prep for Baking Preheat the oven to 350°F. Use nonstick cooking spray to grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
    2. Combine butter, sugar, and vanilla: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the butter, sugar, and vanilla extract.
    3. Add eggs: Mix the eggs until all the ingredients are combined.
    4. Combine dry ingredients: Mix the flour, baking powder, and cocoa powder in a medium-sized bowl.
    5. Add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture. Mix until combined.
    6. Bake: Pour your batter into a greased pan. Spread it evenly. Bake the brownies for 24-27 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs. Allow the brownies to cool completely.

Make the Cheesecake Filling

    1. Mix Cream Cheese and Brown Sugar: Place cream cheese and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl. Stir until smooth.
    2. Add Vanilla and Caramel: Mix the vanilla extract with the caramel sauce. Blend until smooth. Set the bowl aside.
    3. Combine heavy cream & powdered sugar: Add the heavy whipped cream and powdered to a separate bowl. Mix the mixture with a mixer on high speed until it forms stiff peaks. We will fold the whipped cream into the filling to give the mixture the right consistency.
    4. Add to the Filling: Mix 1/3 of the whipped cream with the cream cheese mixture. Mix everything and then fold in the rest of the whipped cream. Leave the cheesecake filling aside.

Assemble the Trifle

    1. Add the First Brownie Layer: Slice the fully cooled and baked brownies into small pieces. The bottom of the trifle dish should have about half the brownie pieces.
    2. Add chocolate sauce to the top of your brownies. Drizzle 3-4 teaspoons of chocolate sauce on top.
    3. Add filling: Spread about half the caramel cheesecake mixture on top of the brownies with chocolate sauce.
    4. Spread Caramel Sauce and Candies on the Cheesecake Filling: Lay 3-4 tablespoons of caramel sauce on top of the cheesecake filling. Next, add toffee bits or Rolos. I added approximately 2-3 tablespoons of health bits to the cheesecake filling and 10 Rolos cut in quarters.
    5. Layering: Repeat with another layer, such as brownies, caramel cheesecake filling or caramel sauce.
    6. Make Chocolate Whipped cream: Add heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar to a large mixing bowl. Keep whipping at high speed until stiff peak forms.
    7. Spread on to Trifle: Spread about half the chocolate whipped cream on top of the trifle. Then, use the rest of the whipped cream to make swirls.
    8. Add toppings: You can use any leftover brownie pieces, candies, or sauces to decorate your trifle.
    9. Chill: You can serve this right away, but I like to keep it in the fridge for at least a few hours before serving it.
