There are many options when it comes to choosing a turntable for cake decorating.
An icing turntable is used by placing an undecorated cake onto its rotating surface, then turning it as you smooth sheets of icing, apply buttercream, pipe frosting or stick decorations on your bake.
Turntables are the tool of choice for filling and frosting a layer cake with ease. But if you don’t have a turntable in your kitchen, don’t let that stop you!
There are many options to choose from: flat ones, raised ones or locking ones.
I will go through all the options and make it easy for you to choose.
You have the option to spend less or more. I own several turntables that I can use in various situations.
Height
First, cake designers believe that decorating is easier when the turntable is elevated. It is easier to work on the sides and bottom of the cake when they are not so close to the counter or table. Cake Art sells most of our turntables on an elevated platform.
Turntables with Ball Bearings
Ball bearings are my favorite! Ball bearing turntables make less noise and are easier to use. While some mechanisms allow you to add 3 in 1 oil occasionally, one turntable that I have owned for 20 years has lasted me well without adding any oil.
Locking turntables
Wilton now offers a raised turntable which locks. This is a fantastic feature! This feature allows you to maintain the cake’s stability for adding layers or removing the entire thing from the counter. Although it comes at a cost, I find it worth it.
Tilting Turntables
If you make intricate side-shaped cakes, these turntables will be a great help. You can use the turntable in a tilted or level position. These turntables can be used in the tilted or level position and offer the best of both. Wilton’s latest turntable (I just received mine this week!) It can be locked in different angles, and it will also lock in the level, flat position. It has all the options I need, and I cannot wait to use it more often.
Dual Side Turntables
These turntables can be found in many commercial bakeries. The rectangular side has the rounder end while the round side has the opposite. Simply flip the turntable to adjust the size of the cake. This sturdy stand makes it easier to secure larger cakes. This stand can hold a three-tiered stacked cake. You can use the rectangular side for sheet cakes and square cakes. The Formica is white. It cleans beautifully. Note: If you use Clorox to clean your equipment, make sure to rinse it with water to ensure that your surface does not get scratched.
Commercial Turntable
Two turntables are available in this style, one each by Fat Daddio and Wilton.
This sturdy metal stand is very strong. A large metal pin holds the decorating surface to the base. The actual table measures 12 inches in diameter. It is very durable and will last forever.
It is important to select the turntable that suits your needs best and has the most storage space.
