Wafer Paper and its Uses

wafer is a crisp, often sweet, very thin, flat, light and dry cookie, often used to decorate ice cream, and also used as a garnish on some sweet dishes. Wafers can also be made into cookies with cream flavoring sandwiched between them. They frequently have a waffle surface pattern but may also be patterned with insignia of the food’s manufacturer or may be pattern-less. Some chocolate bars, such as Kit Kat and Coffee Crisp, are wafers with chocolate in and around them. A communion wafer is a type of unleavened bread consumed after transubstantiation as part of the Christian ritual of communion.

What is Wafer Paper?

Wafer paper is edible paper made from potato flour or rice.

You can purchase it at Cake Art in white 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheets. Individual sheets can be purchased or in a package of 100. The paper is not tasteful and can be used to dissolve a piece of Communion wafer.

Wafer paper is what you should be buying?

Look for sheets that are smooth and unblemished, with uniform color. Keep them flat and away from sunlight and heat.

There are two sides to the sheets: one smooth and one rough. Wafer paper can be used in many different ways for cake decorating. Wafer paper can be used for prepared decorations on tops of cakes as well as to form flowers or support pieces for sculpted cake designs like bunny ears and fingernails.

Cake top preparation

  • You can decide the shape that you want your wafer paper to take – square for a square or round cake, oval for a sheet cake, or round for a round cake. You will need to cut the wafer paper into that shape using a craft knife or scissors. These can be found from many places. Are you using a party template for your cake?   • Make a mirror image by flipping it on your computer/copy machine, or by tracing. Use edible food pens, paste color, and a paint brush to trace your image onto the paper’s rough side.
  • Use an offset spatula to apply a thin layer of clear piping gel. Next, use the spatula for a single stroke to smoothen the wafer paper image. Although the wafer paper will initially curl, the piping gel’s weight should make it flatten.
  • Move the image to waxed papers. You can color an image that you want to put on a cake with edible food markers and a craft brush.
  • You can also color your piece by using petal dusts or edible markers. If you want to use dark colors, make sure that the area is completely dry before applying more color. You can also cut individual pieces, such as flower petals and place them on top of your cake.
  • You can print a picture, design, or pattern onto wafer paper using an edible printer. This will allow you to decorate your cakes, cupcakes, or cookies with it.
