The first step in decorating cakes is to bake the layers correctly and get the right consistency for the buttercream. This HERE post will help you make the moist layers of the cake you desire. We'll get into the buttercream in a moment. Let's get to the decorating tips.

Tips for Beginning Cake Decorators

Tip #1: Use high-quality cake decorating tools.

You may feel mixed emotions about quality cake decorating tools. It is amazing how much it makes a big difference to have quality tools to decorate your cakes. This makes your experience much easier and makes your cake look a million more beautiful. Tip #2: After the crumb coat, freeze your cake. When decorating your cake, the freezer is your friend. Once your cake is ready to decorate, spread a thin layer of frosting all over the cake. After the frosting has set, let your cake cool for about 10-15 minutes. This thin layer is called your crumb coating. When you add buttercream or decorations to your cake, your crumb coat will keep them all together. If your crumb coating isn't fully set when you take your cake from the freezer, you will notice some of your cake layers mixed into the buttercream. You can put it back in the freezer for a few more minutes, then try again. The key to a beautifully decorated and beautiful cake is the crumb coat.

Tip #3: Keep your cake scraper at 45 degrees.

This tip is something I often refer to. This will ensure that your cake has perfectly smooth edges. You can also see what's happening while you smoothen every inch of your cake by holding your scraper at a 45-degree angle. Click here.

Tip #4: Use an acrylic disk to apply buttercream to your cake.

An acrylic disc can be used on top of your cake to create the clean edges you want. This helps to ensure that your sides and top are distinct. However, it can be difficult to remove the acrylic disk once you have applied your buttercream.

Tip #5: Don't let your piping touch the edges of your cake.

You have many options for piping the border and top of your cake. Whatever you choose, hold your piping bag slightly toward the middle of the cake so that your designs don't touch the edges. If your piping bag is too close to the edge of the cake, it will fall down the sides.
